As much as I love mixing gemstones, pearls and found objects with metal, I’ve always been a secret admirer of other coloration techniques from patinas, to enamel, to resin, etc. Patinas are generally an intrinsic part of my artwork. I like to make metal look vintage, and bring out the tiny details I add to it, by adding a darker sheen to certain areas. And although you can do this and create many colors, the choices are still a bit limited.

I’ve played around with resin and even some enamel in the past, but these didn’t really do it for me. The colors all shine – and quite frankly, I’d like my colors to be more matte looking so you can see the metal and it’s finely etched details along with the color.

So guess what? I think I’ve finally found something – Gilder’s paste. Gilder’s paste is a bees wax based paint that you can use on metal. You can add color in may different hues – and it’s permanent! (However, I will still protect my pieces with a special metal lacquer because I’m paranoid that way.) The sample below is something I just started working on today. You have to wait approximately 12-24 hours between coats, so what you see here is not exactly what I expect this to look like just yet – but it is getting close.

Floral colored sterling silver pendant

Oh, the possibilities! I think some new designs may be emerging pretty soon from this. And I think I’ve found my colors!

This little tree looked like it just stepped out of a fairytale – and I just had to have it! It’s called a Weeping Pussy Willow Tree. Supposedly the myth behind it is that it is connected to dreaming, intuition, emotion, healing and revitalization. The flexibility of its branches inspires us to move along with what life brings us rather than resist what we are really feeling.

And they say that this tree has the power to make wishes come true! For a wish to be granted, you must first ask permission of the willow, explaining your desire and then tie a loose knot in one of its pliable branches. When your wish is fulfilled, untie the knot and thank the willow for your gift.

I think this little tree is going to be inspiring lots of designs over the next few months!

Geesh! I look back at the date of when I last posted and I can’t believe how much time has gone by. It’s been a very busy couple of months – and my brain has been churning out new designs and new collection ideas like crazy. However, some of these creative ideas need to be sorted out before I can even begin to tell you what I’ve got planned!

One trend that seems to be occurring over and over again are faces. I’ve always loved faces – whether they be in masks, or pictures, or sculpture. Faces intrigue me. They can tell a story, and convey an emotion without speaking a word. I usually choose to make my faces serene or joyful – never threatening or severe. I think I do this to try to combat all the craziness occurring in the world around us, and in our daily lives.

The faces that are featured in quite a few of the new designs are recent additions to the Faeries & Creatures collection. One of my new favorite pieces is called “Lost in the Night Sky,” which features a peaceful, moon resting in the windy night sky among the stars while she illuminates the world below her.

Another is called “The Guardian,” where a woodland fairy calmly watches over a tiny bird nest until its mother returns from her travels.

I find that I’d rather make my faces those of faeries, or the moon, or of other woodland nymphs, who don’t cause too much mischief, but are there to watch over us and remind us to be happy and keep our imagination alive.

I’ve never had an actual “blog” before. Sure, I’ve posted on Facebook, sent out newsletters, and on one of my first website ventures for Kryzia Kreations, I would update a news page once a month , but never a blog. So, this will be a new adventure! With the holidays fast approaching, it’s been incredibly busy around here and I’ve been trying to find some quiet time to figure out what the next focus will be when it comes to new designs for 2012. Two collections come to mind: 1)an expansion of the “Faeries & Creatures” collection (I’ve been sketching a lot and have some really cool ideas) and 2) a brand new collection of “mini musicians.” I created a piece for a special “Rockin’ the Arts” exhibition this past year in St. Pete, FL and the three little musicians I made touched a soft spot in me. So, I think they need some more friends to play with! If anyone has a suggestion as to what musical instruments my new people should play, let me know.

You never know what I will come up with!
